The other half of it was that I thought, 'If they’ve got a hit record out and they can get away with this, then I have no fucking excuse not to get out on stage with my band.' It was sort of the case of, 'Hey, I can do that.' There really was some of that in there. You blank, blank, blank.”' You can fill in your sexual comments yourself. He’s really pissing people off and he’s lurching around making these guys angry.' People were rushing the stage and Morrison’s going 'Fuck you. I loved the performance Part of me was like, 'Wow, this is great. The stage was tiny and it was really low. So, here’s this guy, out of his head on acid, dressed in leather with his hair all oiled and curled. They had just had their big hit, “Light My Fire” and the album had taken off. That show was a big, big, big influence on me. The first one I attended was early on and they had not gotten their shit together yet. Pop also performed such stage theatrics as rolling around in broken glass, exposing himself to the crowd, and vomiting on stage. Pop was the first performer to do a stage-dive, which he started at a concert in Detroit. Other influences on Iggy Pop's vocals and persona were Mick Jagger and James Brown. Morrison's extreme behavior, while performing in a popular band, inspired the young Pop to push the boundaries of stage performance. The seeds of Iggy Pop's stage persona were sown when he saw The Doors perform in 1967 at the University of Michigan and was amazed by the stage antics and antagonism displayed by singer Jim Morrison. The band was composed of Iggy on vocals, Ron Asheton on guitar, Asheton's brother Scott on drums, and Dave Alexander on bass. Inspired by Chicago blues as well as bands like The Sonics, The MC5 and The Doors, he formed the Psychedelic Stooges and began calling himself Iggy. While in Chicago, he played drums in blues clubs, helped by Sam Lay (formerly of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band) who shared his connections with Iggy. After exploring local blues-style bands such as the Prime Movers (with brothers Dan and Michael Erlewine), he eventually dropped out of the University of Michigan and moved to Chicago to learn more about blues. His later stage name, Iggy, is derived from one of these early bands, the Iguanas. So, without further ado, here's every song you heard in Hulu's Pam & Tommy. The Prime Movers, featuring Pop on drums Osterberg began his music career as a drummer in various high school bands in Ann Arbor, Michigan. And part of that is how the musical choices aren't just good songs, but serve to expand upon what's happening on screen. Pam & Tommy is a lot more nuanced than you might expect a show about a trashy leaked/stolen sex tape to be. Gauthier's acts are obviously unacceptable, but that moment really shows you just how badass he felt in his own mind in that moment. When Gauthier decides to steal from Lee, he says "I am karma, and I’m a bitch," just as the unforgettable opening to Nine Inch Nails' signature hit, "Closer," kicks in. Another episode that finds Lee beefing over studio time with Third Eye Blind ends with "Semi-Charmed Life." An obvious but perfect pick. One episode opens with Chicago's "25 of 6 to 4," which just gets you right in the mood. Neither Lee nor Gauthier are depicted as a hero in this story, while it's tragic to see Anderson's optimism overshadowed by something entering the public eye that she had nothing to do with.Īnd all the while, the series has musical choices that fit the action on screen. The show tells the story of how Lee's mistreatment of a man working on renovating his home named Rand Gauthier (played by Seth Rogen) led to Gauthier burglarizing their house, stealing a safe that contained a home-recorded sex tape of Lee and his wife, model/actress Pamela Anderson (Lily James). Maybe it fits with the show's general message-that Tommy Lee is a sideshow-but maybe it's also sending another message that lingers from the show's very beginning: by 1994, music fans had moved past the hair rock and onto other things. What's more surprising is that the series is filled with era-appropriate music, and Mötley Crüe music has been played exactly zero times. So it's not surprising that there's lots and lots of music featured in the '90s-set series. One of the titular characters of Pam & Tommy, Hulu's new based-on-a-true-story limited series, is a musician: Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee ( Sebastian Stan).
